Law No. 6984/2022 · Permanent Status
The definitive immigration status: no renewals, no expiration, and the step prior to Paraguayan citizenship. We advise you on the 5 access routes available for 2026.
Legal Framework · Law 6984/2022
Permanent Residency is the definitive immigration category granted by the National Directorate of Migration, with no need for periodic renewals. It is the status that, after completing the corresponding period of legal residency, allows you to apply for naturalization and Paraguayan citizenship.
Unlike Temporary Residency, Permanent Residency does not require periodic renewal procedures once granted, except for updating the resident card when applicable.
With 3 years of legal residency in the country (usually counted from Permanent Residency), it is possible to apply for naturalization and obtain Paraguayan citizenship and passport, without giving up your original nationality.
Paraguayan citizenship, attainable after Permanent Residency, includes a passport with free movement across MERCOSUR countries (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and associates).
